Night and Day“NIGHT & DAY: THE SUN ALWAYS RISES”

PICCOLO SPOLETO 2012

Our lives are met with many uncertainties. Relationships come and go. The value of the dollar rises and falls. Today, a promotion. Tomorrow, downsizing. But, there are some things that remain the same night after night and day after day. Often overlooked, they allow for our existence and enrich our lives. The rains will come. Seeds will grow. True love never fails. The sun always rises.

Fifteen artists and several musicians expound on this year's theme through works in photography, film, installation art, sculpture, music, and painting for our third annual Piccolo Spoleto showing. Experience "Night & Day: The Sun Always Rises" from May 25 through June 9 during Charleston's acclaimed festival. This exhibit, as always, is free and open to the public.

Featured artists include painters Alex Radin of Hanahan, Laura Bostrom of Charleston, Austin Smith of Charleston, and Elianna Radin of Hanahan; mixed media artists Amelia (Mimi) Whaley of SponsorsMount Pleasant and Melanie Spinks of Charleston; photographers Kimberly (Kimmie) Krauk of Charleston, Mikayla Mackaness of Charleston, and Jeremy and Jacquelyn Hiott of Hanahan; sculptors and installation artists J.R. and Holly Kramer of Remark Studio in North Charleston, Yuki Tong of Charleston, and Jan Bihlear of Monck's Corner; and film producer Karen DeLoach of Summerville.

The visual artists will be accompanied by musicians throughout the 16 day show at various times including Volcanoes in the Kitchen performing live during our opening and finale. Volcanoes in the Kitchen, a folk/pop local singer/songwriter band includes Drew, Gabrielle, and Hannah Hadley, offering a unique and refreshing blend of sounds.

"These visionary, young artists never fail to put together a show that appeals to and brings out the humanity in all of us," states Ellen Dressler Moryl, Piccolo founder and Director of the Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. "They possess a wonderful talent to give every festival-goer a special gift to take with them for the rest of their lives. Their exhibit can make an optimist out of every viewer."
