We will begin by working in collage so you will not need painting supplies for the first class. It will be helpful to bring in a pair of sissors, magazines, glue, a sketch book, pencils etc... You will need to have your paints by the second class. I recommend working in acrylics if you are just starting out but if you already work in oils or watercolor please feel free to bring whatever supplies you like to work in. Acrylics Basic Supply Kit I tend to prefer Utrecht brand paints and have found them to be priced well in comparison to other high quality brands but you really can get any brand as long as they are professional grade paints. Some other common brands are Liquitex and Golden.
Utrecht professional grade acrylic paints – 2 oz. size (small) in the following colors: Titanium White, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Ultramarine Blue, Alizeran Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Veridian Green, Dioxazine Purple Brush Set for Oils & Acrylics bristle filbert #10, sablette filbert #6, white nylon bright #6, white nylon round #4 Disposable Palettes - 50 sheets - 9" x 12" 1 Palette Knife 1 Small Bucket - You can get this at Lowes. A gallon size is good. 1 Small Terrycloth Rag Canvas - you may want to wait to purchase your canvas until we know the proportions of the artwork you will be creating which should always be based on how it enhances your concept. It does not hurt to have a couple of extras around though. I paint mostly on Birch Wood Panel but there are many options for canvas which can be found at your local art supply store. In Charleston you can check Artist and Craftsman downtown, ACMoore, or Michaels. Extended Supplies If money is not an issue here are some suggestions for extra supplies: Professional grade paints - yellow ochre, raw umber, raw sienna, burnt umber, burnt sienna, titanium white, prussian blue, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, cerulean blue, alizeran crimson, cadmium red medium, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium yellow light, phthalo green, cadmium green light, veridian green, dioxazine purple Brushes - You can never have enough brushes. The key is to get a good variety in sizes and also to make sure you have some good quality brushes. Make sure you get some large brushes for washes and covering large areas.
